Russian soldiers and citizens have a history in Dalian starting from 1898. The city is one of a very few sites in all of China that has preserved graveyards for foreign nationals. Cemetery of Soviet Martyrs is a well known tourist attraction.
The cemetery covers an area of about 48,000 square meters (57,409.4 square yards), it ranks as the largest for a foreign nation in China. Here lie buried Soviet martyrs who fell during the war of Liberation of Northeast of China and the War against US Aggression in support of Korea, as well as those died in the Lushun garrison in 1945-1955. There are total 1,323 tombs in side the cemetry. In the center of the cemetery stands the soviet monument, which looks imposing and magnificent against blue and cloudy sky. The cemetery has the style of Soviet construction. The ornaments of each tomb are very special. Either anchor, tank or airplane are set at the top of the tombs, it symbolizes the ranks and branches of the martyrs.
In 1989, the cemetery was listed as cultural relics under provincial protection.
