The Gezhouba Water Conservancy Project is the first large-scale hydroelectric project built on the Yangtze River, which, seen from the peak of Xiling Gorge, is amazingly like a pearl inlaying in the picturesque Three Gorges, making the natural landscape more attractive and gorgeous. Standing on the bank of the Yangtze River, looking down at the Gezhouba Dam enjoying the roaring water rushing out of the flood discharge gate will be a special experience, especially the sight of a rainbow formed when the sun shining on the spray will make the whole dam a wonderland.
The Gezhou Island and Xibazhou Island, holding the Gezhouba Dam, divide the Yangtze River into three streams. The construction of the Gezhouba Dam together with the great fall of the Yangtze River provides the favorable shipping waterway and appeals to a growing number of tourists from near and far.
The Project includes the barrage, the power plant, the ship brake, the flood discharge brake, and the fish-way etc. It is currently the largest hydropower station in China. The embankment is 2,561 m long and 70 m high, which controls a drainage area of 1,000,000 km with total content of 1.58 billion stereos. With 21 sets of dynamo, the hydropower station will generate 13.8 billion KWH a year.
