Heishan Mountain is located in the northwest of Jiayuguan. Heishan Mountain is also called Dongting Mountain. Heishan Rock Carvings was discovered in 1972 along Heishan Cliff, there are total 153 carvings scattered in five locations which could be dated back from Warring States Period to Ming Dynasty. The carvings were listed as cultural relics under provincial protection in 1981.
The sizes of the carvings range from 0.2-3 meters. They reflect the colorful activities and patterns, such as hunting, horse riding and dancing as well as some animals. The most amazing carving is the one on which the scene of drilling is depicted. They are a lively record of ethnic life in ancient China; which is significant both in terms of arts and cultural research.
