Nanmen Lake (South Gate Lake) is located in downtown Jiujiang. It is connected to Gantang Lake via Ligong Dike with a small dam in between.
The history of Nanhu Lake could be dated back to Tang Dynasty. The city wad surrounded with rivers in the south and west, which were connected with Yangtze River. Thus, the city was vulnerable to the floods. What is more, people had to go a long way across the river. In order to facilitate the transportation and prevent floods, an official by the name of Li Bo initiated a dam project in Jingxing River. As a result, Jingxing River was divided into two parts. One part in the east facing south gate was called Nanmen Lake(inner lake),and the other was called Gantang Lake(outer lake).
Lotus is planted in the lake. In summer, the lake is flourished with lotus blossoms and seedpods. The beautiful scenery attracted many photographers and tourists. In 2006,a ceramic mural featuring lotus was placed along the river bank. The mural is as long as 150 meters with 30 lotus blossoms appearing on it in different postures. The genuine lotus and mural lotus are contrasted vividly with each other.
In the square nearby, fascinating music fountain will be played at night.
