Hongyadan Well is located above mountain stream of Wujingyuan, North to Wanli District. Waterfall falls down from sharp cliff and the well is too deep to reach the bottom.
According to historic records, the well is the place where Ling Lun, musical courtier of Yellow Emperor, made practices and composed music. Ling Lun came to Hongya, drilled five wells, from which the water was used to make pill of immortality. After the pills were successfully made, he passed away. The origin of the well and the story of Ling Lun are engraved along the cliff. The most attractive is two Chinese Characters Hong Ya inscribed in Qing Dynasty. The words are still clear and vivid after so many years. In Sui Dynasty, the Well was named after Hongya in memory of this story.
Being one of Top Ten Yuzhang Sceneries, Hongyadan Well is the showcase of splendid ancient Chinese culture. It is the birthplace of Chinese classical music. Hence .alias of Nanchang is root of Hong Du. Many poets, painters and celebrity left their footprints and masterpieces here in order to worship Ling Lun, Muse in ancient Chinese history. Hongya became even more popular with their visits. The water from the well, known as the 8th spring under heaven, is ideal for boiling teas, highly recommended by Lu Yu, Tea Saint in Chinese history.
Hongyadan Well is one of major scenic spots in Meiling Scenic Area. In Cuiyanchan Temple, incent sticks are burned continuously with bell ringing at dawn and sunset, and monks chant the sutras everyday, in Hunyuan villa are exquisite potted landscape. Muse Palace is set in solemn and magnificent style. In addition to cultural and human relics, there are several beautiful lakes with gorgeous scenery.
Hongyadan is place of historic interest with a long history. It is not only a hot tourist attraction but also a place for camping and scientific research.
