Shengjin Pagoda

Shengjin Pagoda

The Shengjin Pagoda is located on Shengjinta Street. It is said that an iron box was dug up while the Pagoda was being built. In the box there were four bundles of gold ropes, three ancient swords and 300 Buddhist Relics. So it was called the Shengjin Pagoda. The Shengjin Pagoda was built during 904 and 907 in the Tang Dynasty and rebuilt in 1713 in the Qing Dynasty. The tower had a history of more then a thousand and known as landmark of Nanchang.

Shengjin Pagoda is a typical Jiangnan-style tower made of wood and brick. It is 58.7 meters high .It has seven floors and eight sides. Red railing and green tiles add strong religious flavor to the building. There are carved eaves and verandas on each floor and doors facing each direction. Bronze bells hang below the eaves, one tone for one floor, total seven tones for the tower. The will make pleasant sound when ringing. There are four true openings and false openings on ever floor. Openings on each floor are not identical either in positions or in shapes. Moon opening for first floor, Ruyi opening for the second and third floor, and Fire opening for four and 7 floor. On the top of the Pagoda is a gold-plated tripod. It is the tallest among the ancient structures in Nanchang. Standing on top of the pagoda, one can get a panoramic view of the city. Such style is unique in building a tower. It is the showcase of exquisite craftsmanship and unique design.

According to historical records, Shengjin Pagoda has been destroyed and was rebuilt for several times. It was first rebuilt in the 1386 during Ming Dynasty after a war between the Ming and Yuan Dynasties. And it was destroyed later in 1713 during Qing Dynasty and reconstruction was needed. However, it was declined by the imperial court claiming that there "was not a single tile to spare". The repairs was continued now and then and was eventually restored until it was struck by lightning in 1886 and burnt to ashes. It took 100 years to be rebuilt finally in 1985 with  the coordination of the provincial and national heritage trusts .During maintenance in 1988, some precious historic relics were found and they are on display in Thousand-Buddha Temple of Shengjin Pagoda. According to a old saying, Tengwang Pavilion and Shengjin Pagoda are important symbols of Nanchang. If they collapse, the treasure and people will be gone, the city will no be prosperous any more.
