Olympic Square is situated between Zhongshan Road and Wusi Road, downtown area of Dalian city. Occupying an area of 42,000 square meters, the project was held by City Construction Committee on Jun. 1st, 1996 and completed on Sep. 3rd, 1999. The square comprised a green area of 15,638 square meters, a stone area of 18,079 square meters and the 5,062 square meters Olympic Rings Square in the center.
In 1932, Liu Changchun, a Dalian local resident, competed in the 10th Olympic Games held in Los Angeles. Liu was the first Chinese to take part in the Olympics. Decades have passed, the spirit of sport loving has been passed down through the generations and now Dalian is known as a "Soccer City" and the "Home of Track & Field".
In September 1999, Mr. Samaranch, Chairman of the International Olympic Committee of the day, attended the foundation-stone laying ceremony for the Square. To the south of the square stands the city's central stadium which its soccer team calls home.
The steel Rings, with a height of 8.79m and a length of 19.333m and a total weight of 13 tons, sit in the middle of the square. Each of the five rings was 6m in diameter, and was glazed by world first-class cold spangles of five different colors which can be controlled by computer to form thousands of combined glaring lights.
With green meadows and flowery odor all around, the Olympic Square was like a dream in the night. The zooming fountain and delighted people dance to the melody of the square, making it the special scenery one can not miss.
