Ci'en Temple is the most important site for Buddhists in Shenyang; it was built during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Now it becomes the center for the Shenyang Buddhism Association.
To say that this temple has witnessed a few changes is a glaring understatement. Originally built in the 8th Century during the Tang dynasty, and then rebuilt during the Qing dynasty, it served as a place of worship until the Cultural Revolution converted into a factory. In 1987 the factory moved out and the temple returned to being the home of incense-burning Buddhist monks. Today visitors can walk the temple's courtyard and shop the surrounding alleys for Buddha statues and jewelry.
