Here is a peaceful natural reserve, here is a natural valley as a joint of two vast tropical forests, here is a paradise of thousands kinds of rarely seen plants, here live harmoniously more than 300 wild elephants. Inside this steaming forest that covers a vast area of millions hectares, elephants in groups of three and five are chilling, seeking foods, talking walk by the river, along the roads.
To the Dai people, the elephant is the symbol of good luck, might and longevity. The wild elephants of Xishuangbanna mainly live in the Wild Elephants Valley where as an open landscape with undulant hills is covered by dense tropical rain forests, crisscrossed by rivers and streams, and abounding with such endangered species as Asian wild elephants, wild oxen and green peacocks.
Actually this is the only place in Xishuangbanna, known locally as the "Kingdom Of Elephants", that tourists can marvel at these giant animals. There is an observation tower and a five kilometer-long sightseeing cableway, a 300-metre-long overhead corridor built for elephant watchers. A hotel is built right in the trees to satisfy the visitors who long to observing wild elephants more closely. The best time to see these impressive beasts is at dawn or dusk. Elephant shows are held at 11:00 am-12:00 noon and 2:00-3:00 pm everyday. There are also an elephant training school, a butterfly breeding centre, and a giant aviary in Yexianggu, which makes it one of the finest scenic spots in Xishuangbanna.
When going around his mysterious wild valley, do not be afraid of being attracted by the wild elephants for they are a gentle and spirit beings, and what you need to do is to enjoy the natural pictures, experience the adventure, and pay respect to the local customs.
