108 pagodas are the largest existing pagodas complex in China. It is located in the west banks of Qingtongxia Reservior, 60 kilometers away form Yinchuan. Silk manuscripts in Tangut were unearthed beneath the pagoda. It is assumed that they might be built During West Xia Dynasty. The pagodas were built along the slope of Xiakou Mountain with 12 lines in odd numbers(1,3,3,5,5,7,9,11,13,15,17,19),total 108 pagodas, hence the name.
All 108 pagodas were erected on an octagonal Sumeru base with a solid, overturned bowl shape. They range in height from 3.5 to 2.5 meters, fashioned in three shapes (pyramid, gourd, and vase). The pagodas are covered with lime with a pearl-shaped top, resembling that of the white pagoda of the Yuan Dynasty at the Beijing Miaoying Temple. The top pagoda is the largest one, and others diminish in size, layer by layer. From a distance, a full view of the entire group of pagodas can be achieved. Such a pagoda group is unique in terms of Chinese architecture.
In Buddhism, troubles and miseries in life could be classified into 108 types, In order to get rid of them, beads and rituals(such as chanting the sutras and ringing the bells) are all counted based on the number of 108. There is no exception to 108 pagodas. It is said all your trouble will go way if you count up all pagodas. It is a custom of bestowing luck and auspice.
