Shawan Ruins is located in the dunes of eastern Qiao Island. Painted pottery made in Neolithic Age were found in 1984 when a cultural relics survey was carried out in Zhuhai.It one of rare ancient culture ruins with a long history ever discovered in Guangdong Province. The unearthed relics include pottery beans, stone balls, crystal masses and several kinds of pottery trays with ring foot. One of them is engraved with three scratches being a flower ornaments. Such kind of tray is first of its kind ever found in Guangdong. The test made by Chinese Academy of Science shows that the site has a history of 4,450 years.
Shawan, being a southern ancient town with a history of 8, 00 years, is named after its location near crescent-shaped beach.
Shawan is located in the center of Pearl River Delta and enjoys convenient transportation. It used be a small fishing village. In Song Dynasty, the villagers reclaimed land from the sea by building dykes in order to expand farming. In Ming Dynasty, a rich businessman came here to settle down. During wars, many people took refuge here. With more populating and farmland, Shawan turned into a land of milk and honey gradually.
After China's opening to outside world, Shawan was awarded many honors due to its growing economy and strong cultural atmosphere.
