Jurassic Alsophila Kingdom is located at Chishui National Nature Reserve, first of its kind in China. The reserve aims at the protecting the alsophila trees and ecological environment in the area. Chishui is located at the edge of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau where it descends sharply to the Sichuan Basin. With high mountains and deep valleys, the area is free from human activities in ancient times. Thus, alsophila survives. Footprints of dinosaur were found in the border of Chishui, the length of which surpassed that found in Zigong County, Sichuan Province. Scientists proved it was the place where dinosaurs used to live.
There are more than 40,000 alsophila trees in the Kingdom. The lush ferns are distributed densely in groups. There are various alsophila trees. Some are pairs that grow together, some grows with tow branches in the trunk, and others have three branches. Normally, the evergreen tree is as high as 3-5 meters, highest reaching 10m.No braches grow from the trunk ,making it look like an umbrella.
Alsophila is a kind of rare fern surviving from Jurassic period. It is living fossil for scientific research. More than two hundred million year ago, the fern vegetation is thick in the area. Dinosaurs will eat the little thins on these trees. After quaternary glacier, alsophila trees only grow in some low-latitude areas. In 2000, the local government opened its "Jurassic Park". The few dinosaur sculptures notwithstanding, only adventure seekers come here.
With graceful peaks and ridges, old trees reaching to the skies, water tumbling down sheer red cliffs, it is an ideal place for ecological travel and scientific survey.
