The Monument to the Red Armymen’s Martyrs

Built in 1985 and designed by the Sichuan Academy of Arts, the Monument on the Hongjunshan (Red Armymen's Hill) portrays the story of the Long March and the major battles in Guiyang. Large number of enormous sculptures and the Graveyard of the Unknown Soldiers nearby create a heroic but solemn and stirring atmosphere around.

The Monument of the Red Army men’s Martyrs is located in Cemetery Of Red Army Martyrs, which is 1,000 meters away from Zunyi Conference Site. At the 50th anniversary of Zunyi Conference Site in 1984, the government decided to set up The Monument to the Red Army men’s Martyrs in the Cemetery.

Entering the Cemetery, walking along the stone steps, you will see a magnificent and unique monument standing in the platform at the top of the cemetery.

In the front are eight Chinese characters inscribed by Mr. Deng Xiaoping on Nov, 2nd,1984, which highly praised the sacrifice that passing martyrs made for the liberation, and their spirits are eternal.

The monument is 30 meter high, 6 cubic meters at the bottom and 2 cubic meters at the top. Symbols of hook and hammer with a height of 5meters are placed on the top of the monument. They are made of titanium nitride alloy plates which look like shining fish scales. Around the monument is a circle with 20 meters by diameter and 2.7 meters by height.28 shining stars are embedded in external wall of the circle, which indicate the spirit of Zunyi Conference will last forever. On internal wall are four white marble relief sculptures featuring significant events and battles during liberation war. The circle is two meter above the ground, which are supported by four 5-meter high stone heads of Red Army men. The stone heads are carved out of purple granite. They are the representatives of various Red Army: old and young, amateur and female. This implies the power and popularity of Red Army.

Now it has been appointed by State Council as one of Key Martyrs Memorial Architecture Under state-lever protection. It also served as one of the first patriotic education bases.
