Before 1176 (Southern Song Dynasty),the old town was inhibited by indigenous Mu family. Thus the town was called Mu Jia Chuan (land of Mu family).Owing to it fertile soil and ideal geographical location,12th Chieftain of Yang family, Yang Zhen took a fancy to this place. He ordered his tribe to move and settle down here. The government buildings and fortifications were built. Since then, the old town became the center of politics, economy and culture in Northern Guizhou.
After 13th Chieftain Yang Can succeeded, he attached great importance to the development of production and transportation. Virtuous persons and refined scholars were invited to supervise government affairs. The old town had become a busy market place as hundreds of years passed, especially between big Crossroad and North Gate. The traffic was quite convenient in the city gates except for the West Gate.
In 1382 (Ming Dynasty), more lanes and streets were mapped out. There were 3 streets and six lanes at that time .As the lion is the symbol of power and social status, 9 stone lions were put in the gates of important buildings such as government office and temples. Sanguan Pavilion in wood structure at Hejia Lane was the highest building in Zunyi at that time. During Qing and Ming Dynasty, the wall was reinforced and the town had been expanding. During the reign of Emperor Qing Gaozong, prefectural magistrate of Zunyi-Chen Yutun introduced mulberry tree and silk worms. Silkworm nursery was built outside East gate, where trading and deals were made as well. That was when the new town and market place were developed gradually.
The old town has survived with the changes of several dynasties. It is the reflection of Zunyi history. Museum of Zunyi Meeting Xiangshan Buddhist Temple are located in this area. The old town took on a new look after the liberation. Newly-built Pedestrian Street, snack shops, cafe and shopping malls mingle with Chinese style buildings in the town, a combination of modern and ancient style.
