There were two ancient lanes below Zhengyang Gate near Prince Jingjiang Mansion, East Lane and West Lane. As the urban redevelopment going into depth, West Lane has disappeared for a long time. Only East Lane keeps its original appearance. Wandering along this ancient lane, you can not only appreciate old architectures, but also experience Guilin’s brilliant history.

According to the records, Cen Yuying, the Yunnan-Guizhou governor during the reign of Tongzhi (1862~1875), built his own mansion in East Lane. His third son, Cen Chunxuan became the Governor of Guangdong and Guangxi and had good relationship with Kang Youwei, one of the leaders of Wuxu Reform (1895). Mr. Kang paid a visit to East Lane when he was in Guilin. Besides, East Lane played an important role in the early 1900’s. The secret service of Guangxi Branch of Tung-meng Hui set its office in this lane in 1910.

As a famous historic and cultural city, the municipal government of Guilin should pay more attention on cultural relics protection. As any rate, although this ancient lane can be rebuilt if it disappeared, it cannot maintain its original characters and its specific historic significance.

Please do not make it disappear!
