Suzhou in Brief

Suzhou, a 4,000-year-old city, lies in the estuary of the Yangtze River and on the shore of Lake Taihu. From the year 514 B.C. on, Suzhou has been a city of strategic significance, in that Suzhou has command of excellent geographic and climate conditions as well as the Grand Cannel that makes Suzhou a land of milk and honey.

Hailed as the World’s Barn and the Land of Milk and Honey, Suzhou gave birth to the colorful Wu cultures and Suzhou particular customs as well as the treasured specialties. Elegant gardens, idiomatical architectures, Suzhou silk, Su Embroidery, Su Opera and Biluochun Tea are all the Chinese precious cultural heritages, among which the four most spectacular gardens in Suzhou-- Canglang Pavillion, Lion Grove, Humble Administrators’ Garden and Liu Garden manifests fully Song (960-1234), Yuan (1206-1370), Ming (1364-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) Dynasty’ style of art respectively.

Suzhou is also a melting pot in which 39 Chinese ethnic minorities live and five religions Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Catholicism, and Protestantism prevail. Therefore, various minority customs can be experienced around Suzhou, while the religious architectures can be commonly seen such as the Hanshan Temple, the North Temple Pagoda and the Mysterious Taoist Temple.
