Renmin Square which used to be known as Stalin Square was built in memory of the Red Army of the Soviet Union's liberation over northeastern China. The cenotaph in the center was moved to Lushun Soviet Army Martyr Cemetery in 1999. The memorial facilities for the Army are concentrated here. The cenotaph was replaced by a white marble waterfall cloister which was built in European style. A musical fountain was also built which is the largest of its kind in the city. You can enjoy the natives dancing cheerfully every morning under the backdrop of the fountain mist.
The national flag dominates here at Renmin Square as in the People's Square in many other Chinese cities. The national flag flies solemnly over a number of imposing governmental buildings and the monument to the Communist Revolution that happens to be a huge statue of a Russian soldier. The statue was built to commemorate the soldiers of Soviet Union who helped to takeover the city from the Japanese invaders during the Second World War.
The Renmin Square remains a pleasant spot for the people of Dalian and its tourists. There were recent renovations that were carried out to bring back the crowds.
