Widely known as the "Garden on the Sea", "the City on the Sea and the Sea in the City", Xiamen is an island city as one of the most attractive seaport scenic cities in southeast coast of China. The administration organizational system of Xiamen has found since Song dynasty, and built the city walls and established Xiamen as a major seaport and commercial centre in Ming; the city has significantly benefited from Taiwanese, overseas Chinese and foreign investment and its designation as a Special Economic Zone in 1980, like Shenzhen. Gulangyu Island has become an international settlement sine1842, where many Victorian and Neoclassical style buildings are well protected. It has a population of about 1 million with many Nationalities such as Han, She, Hui, Miao, Manchu and Gaoshan. The older parts of the city preserve architectural styles of a century ago while the modern part of Xiamen is growing fast. The city’s prosperity was due to trade and wealth sent back by Xiamen’s substantial emigrant community of overseas Chinese.
Its regional advantages and marine, land and air transport facilities have injected vigor into the sustained and rapid development of its tourism industry. Today Xiamen is one of China’s most attractive and best-maintained resort cities.
