Big Solitary Hill is located in the South of Poyang Lake, Hukou County, Jiujiang City. It is an island formed during Quaternary glacial period more than 20,000 years ago. It is also called Shoes Hill because it resembles shoes when being viewed from afar. It is 90 meters above water with craggy cliff on three sides. A cave in northwester corner serves is the only access to the Hill.
As the legend goes, a fish man caught a box in the Poyang Lake, in which was a shining pearl. He went home happily. On the way home, he saw a crying girl. He came up to her and asked what happened. The girl said she cried for the lost pearl. After hearing of it, the fish man returned the pearl to her immediately. The girl was so grateful of it. One day, the fish men was gotten caught in a heavy storm when fishing. In eleventh hour, the girl used the pearl to save his life. Then they fell in love with each other. It turned out that the girl (called Dagu) is the daughter of Jade Emperor, The supreme Taoist deity. She was banished to the mortal world by the Emperor as punishment for mistakes she had made.
Meanwhile, the land lord was deeply attracted by her appearance and forced her to marry him .However he was declined. The Jade Emperor got to know her love affair and send soldiers to get her back to the Heaven. The landlord also took the chance to get rid of the fish man. At the sight of this, the girl threw her shoes on the landlord .Shoes was turned into the stone and killed him. That is the origin of Big Solitary Hill.
The hill is rich in human landscape. As recorded by Waterways Classic, Da Yi, a water control hero in ancient times used to engrave the merits on the cliff. Later in Dynasty, Dagu Temple was built on the hill. In Ming Dynasty, buildings such as Putuo Temple, Pagoda and Queen Palace were added. But unfortunately, most of them are severely damaged due to wars.
In recent years, temples and pagodas were rebuilt. It is a important scenic spot in Poyang Lake.
